well if you look at the statistical average change of allen iversons rebounds multiplied by his over/under average, compared to sam cassels ability to dish out the assist while looking like an alien, all divided by the lameness of this blog and the NBA (minus bobby jackson and devin harris), you will be surely shocked.

The sports media makes me sick on moral issues like this. The only solace I take is in the fact that the responses we are subjected to by most sports writters are merely the result of their contractual obligation to take up print space, not anything resembling deeply held beliefs. Each writer has a few hours, the facts at hand as seen on sports-center, and his own limited creative impulses with which to address the issue of the day. The media response to these kinds of events are quite predictable both in the viewpoints expressed and the number of days the stories run. Few sports fans will be so morally offended that they stop watching.

Your analysis of the media paradigm is spot on.

But I dont think Stern is over-reacting here. Anthony went out of his way to throw a sucker punch and then hilariously ran away. This is an action that should cause him as an individual to be held accountable. If you think this is excessive or counter-productive, please tell me what other possible response should there be from the commish?

The only critique I could add to his treatment of the situation is that I think the penalties for each particular action could easily be standarized. You get off the bench: 1 game. Attempt a punch: 2 games. Connect: 5. Run away like a little bitch: extra 5 games. Actually endangering a fan... A little rubric like this would take the percieved subjectiveness away.

What is so interesting is the double standard. "Mayhem in the Garden" happens when lanky Black dudes start swinging and rarely connect or do any damage. But if the average Rangers game in the SAME ARENA goes by without a fight, people are dissapointed. Like NASCAR crashes, hockey fights bring some actual excitement into a loud sport that seems to go on and on and on, with the interesting things happening too quickly to detect. I think the reason fights are more shocking in basketball is that the sport itself is actually fun to watch.

Each sport will continue to have its own different expectations and unwritten rules. Hypocritical? yea but so what?

This is maybe taking it in an entirely different direction, but I was wondering what you thought about the different treatment of the steroid scandals in sports. While baseball is being tarnished by Bonds' drive towards Aaron's record (everyday during baseball season I cheer for three things: Twins victories and career ending injuries to Bonds and A.J) and is not allowing McGwire (or Sosa some day) into The Hall because they refuse to admit to steroid use, NFL players get four game suspensions and a small blurb at the end of the weekly wrapup for testing positive. Shawne Merriman from the Chargers even made the Pro Bowl even though he missed four games THIS SEASON for taking preformance enhancing drugs. How does this compare/does it compare with the not-so-laughably racist policies towards fights in the NBA versus baseball, hockey and football?

It seems that the only thing all major sports agree on is that marijuana use should incur huge fines and suspensions since it obviously shows players to be moral degenerates (oh Onterrio Smith, where have you gone?)
